I went to a Social Media Club Melbourne #SMCMelb MeetUp last night and had the pleasure of meeting Facebook (and many other awesome peeps).
I was super excited to have Facebook (or at least the official spokesperson for Facebook on the night) buy me a drink, tell me that I am a valuable resource to Facebook, let me in on (some of) the latest developments at Facebook (there is lots more top secret stuff going on), pose with me for a #selfie and then he gave me some Facebook swag.
What an awesome night!
So here’s a run down of what else happened whilst I was there (and afterwards), including what’s going on with Facebook right now…
Facebook’s Reach Is HUGE!
With the acquisition of many apps over the years, plus the growth in the number of apps and features within the platform, the Facebook Community is HUGE!
— SocialMediaClub Melb (@SMCMelb) August 5, 2015
And it’s a highly engaged community too. The usage stats in Australia will blow your mind considering that at the time of writing we currently have a population of 23,855,205 people. Almost half of our entire population log onto Facebook every day!
Video Viewing On Facebook Is Taking Off!
The ice-bucket challenge is what triggered Facebook’s transition into auto-play video after seeing how well people responded to seeing so much video content in their Newsfeed. Video views on Facebook have been steadily rising ever since. Interestingly, more than 75% of video views per day happen via video.
Mobile is the driver of video consumption #SMCMelb … My data usage agrees! 🙂

Mobile Usage Is Through The Roof
It may come as no surprise that the majority of the population spend a significant portion of their day with their eyes transfixed on their mobile devices. But what you might not be aware of it that 80% of that time spent on a mobile device is spent in apps. Even more impressive is that, in Australia, one out of every three minutes on mobile is spent on either Facebook, Instagram or Whatsapp. Not bad new for Facebook, who owns all three of these apps!
FOBO Is A Real Thing!
You may have heard of FOMO (fear of missing out) before, but it seems that FOBO (fear of being offline) is becoming an even bigger issue amongst the youth of today.

Facebook Messenger For Business
Facebook are rolling out new features that will allow more ways for People and Pages to communicate privately on Facebook. Some of these features include:
- “Send Message” call-to-action button for local awareness ads, allowing people to initiate private conversations with business Pages from Newsfeed ads, giving people a personal way to connect with businesses directly from ads.
- Ability to reply to public comments with a private message.
- “Very responsive to messages” badge to identify Pages that are very responsive to private messages.
- Option to block private messages from businesses.
Facebook Pages Overhaul Coming
There will be a complete overhaul coming to Facebook Page in September 2015. No details as to what this means as yet, but I will be updating my FB Business Success NOW! online training program once this is rolled out to make sure that all my peeps continue to stay up-to-date on what’s working on Facebook for business NOW!
Facebook Insights are an amazingly powerful tool. These tools allow you to better understand your audience, so you can be what matters to them. Facebook insights can help businesses understand people across generations, geographies, devices and time. If you are not studying your audience insights and learning form the data, then you are are missing out!
Facebook Is Connecting People
Facebook is committed to connecting the world to the Internet through Internet.org. Internet.org is a Facebook-led initiative bringing together technology leaders, nonprofits and local communities to connect the two thirds of the world that doesn’t have internet access.
Create Instagram Ads Within Facebook Ads Manager
Coming soon (like any moment now), you will be able to create Ads on Instagram and you will be able to do it within the Facebook Ads Manager, using all the tools that you are already familiar with, plus the power of Facebook’s Audience Network.
Schedule Instagram Posts In Hootsuite
So technically, this wasn’t announced at the event, but I saw it on Twitter whilst I was there and it is big news, so I thought I would let you know… You can now schedule Instagram posts within the Hootsuite dashboard. This native integration allows Hootsuite users to:
- Schedule and publish Instagram content
- Monitor and engage with Instagram audiences
- Securely share access to Instagram accounts across teams
- Create team workflows, including assignments and approvals for Instagram
This is massive news for anyone that uses Instagram, but would like to get a little more organised and strategic in posting content.
Facebook Live Video
And then something that didn’t get a mention on the night, but is MASSIVE news just announced this morning is that Facebook is launching live video on Facebook! Move over Periscope and Meerkat, there’s a new kid on the block and he has loads of Friends, so chances are he’s going to be pretty popular.
Starting today you will be able to see live video from public figures in your Newsfeed.
You can comment on, like or share the video while watching a live broadcast. You can also see when your friends or other public figures start watching. If you miss the live broadcast, then you can watch the video later via the public figure’s Facebook Page.
This broadcast feature is currently limited to only public figures with verified Pages in the U.S. using the Facebook Mentions App. Facebook does plan to roll Mentions out to more countries and verified Profiles in the coming months.
Here’s an example of a Facebook Live Video by Gary Vaynerchuk (not the most exciting video, but you get the picture).
Check out the engagement in the comments – it’s nuts! Looks like there are some early issues in regards to the live broadcast streaming and comments lagging for the broadcaster. Facebook will no doubt improve this with time.
My first at bat with Facebook mentions Live in OKC Posted by Gary Vaynerchuk on Wednesday, August 5, 2015
Really looking forward to when Facebook rolls this out to the masses. However, my guess is that it won’t be too soon as the data load if everyone starts live broadcasting at once would be massive!
Facebook & Instagram Swag
And probably not that exciting for you, but super exciting for me, is that I got some Facebook and Instagram swag. I now have some new pens!
